Founder / Master Butcher (Emeritus)
Founded the shop · 1958
Ray Vaughn founded Vaughn Family Meat Co. in 1958 when he hung a hand-painted sign on a narrow storefront along Ranch Road in Gardnerville. He had one cutting block, a walk-in cooler he built with his father-in-law, and a promise to neighbors: honest weight, honest price, and a butcher who would listen.
Those first decades set the tone the shop still runs on. Ray taught his son Dale how to break down a side, talk a customer through a Sunday roast, and never cut a corner just because it was easier. Even in retirement, he still stops by to check the counter, swap stories with regulars, and make sure the next generation remembers why the shop opened in the first place.
Ask him about the early days if he is in his usual chair—you will hear about Carson Valley neighbors, ranch partners who became friends, and a family business built one careful cut at a time.
Stop by the shop for today's cuts, call ahead for custom orders, or ask our butchers what's fresh out of the smokehouse.
